About the Author

Gary Izzo has been helping people tap into their creative side long before “creative flow” became a buzzword. A former Disney Show Director and author of the groundbreaking book The Art of Play, Gary is a nationally recognized innovator in improvisation, personal creativity, and interactive theatre. If you’ve ever been pulled into a live, unscripted moment at a theme park or festival, chances are, Gary helped shape that experience.

He got his start directing at Renaissance festivals in the ’70s and went on to found Creative Entertainment, Inc.—a company dedicated to audience-inclusive theatre that breaks the fourth wall and brings people directly into the story. He’s trained hundreds of actors in the art of improv, interactive, and immersive performance, many of whom have gone on to Broadway, film, and TV.

Gary’s creative fingerprints are all over the entertainment world. At Walt Disney World, he helped pioneer the use of live actors in attractions and designed interactive shows that redefined guest engagement. As a director and creative consultant for Paramount Parks, he led the Star Trek World Tour and helped launch internal “creative think” programs for staff innovation. And for nearly five decades, he’s served as Creative Director of the Sterling Renaissance Festival—an entire Elizabethan village fueled by improvisation, Shakespeare, and full-throttle imagination.

Beyond the stage, Gary’s impact reaches far beyond actors and artists. His workshops have helped everyone from architects to pro wrestlers reconnect with their creativity, boost their self-awareness, and bring more energy and originality to their work. With his new book, Creative Fluency: Tools for the Curious Mind, Gary brings his years of creative insight to anyone ready to unlock the power of their imagination—no stage required.
